Scams
Since there has been such a huge response to my Grey Goose job scam, I’ve decided to make an entire page dedicated to scams. I will add new ones as I hear them, and will make sure to let people know when I update. So if you know of any that I haven’t listed, please let me know! Email me at dannifoleyblog@hotmail.com or leave me a comment! Thanks everyone!
Here are some Rules of Thumb when looking for a potential scam email. They were submitted by Kevin via email.
- They are impersonal to you.
- They refuse or forget to give information about the company.
- They want personal info that they are able to gain access to themselves AFTER they have hired you.
- You feel like you are being sold on the job by the recruiter but you don’t recognize the person they are talking about.
- They email you from a non-corporate account, such as a gmail or hotmail account.
- They don’t want questions!!!
What to do if you find a scam (thanks to Xavier for doing the leg work):
You can report this sort of [stuff] to Internet Crime Complaint Center: http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx
Consumer Fraud http://www.consumerfraudreporting.org/reporting.php
Possibly to the identity theft people: http://www.justice.gov/criminal/fraud/websites/idtheft.html

Also, the company will want to talk to you in person. resumès only get your foot in the door. The sad part is that many people lie on their resumès and they want to make sure you are legit.
Once they hire someone is nearly impossible to fire them, so they are also checking to make sure you are not crazy.
If then don’t contact you to setup a personal meeting either in face or over the phone, it’s probably not a legit email. They will never ask you for personal information over email without first talking to you personally first.
That’s true too! I had never thought of that before!
I got the exact same Grey Goose e-mail from Tina Peters! Has anyone fallen for it? Stupidly, I did and filled out the credit report. I’ve looked through it again and it doesn’t say my SSN, credit card number, or anything like that. Are there any consequences???
FREAKING OUT!
There should be a number you can call and complain to. Someone had mentioned that they had called them about it.
Yes I have receved those scams also, here another common scam:

I got the Grey Goose e-mail a few days ago, and was actually going to do it, until something told me to do some research, which brought me to your website. I must admit I am a bit disappointed that it was a scam, but I’m glad I discovered it before and not after. Thanks for saving my identity! =)
I knew there was something strange about Swan Arts. For starters as a music teacher i never heard of that school and second, on there website they have no contact information on how to get in contact with them. I was realy hoping that this was not a scam.
I found this one on craigslist, which was very similar to the Grey Goose Scam… All the wording are identical, only a few wording were replaced.

OMG I GOT THIS SAME JOB OFFER from Kristen Stafiero!!!
THANK GOD I googled her name and her qualifications. The email was so generic and it said, “dear applicant”. Plus the job didn’t ask to meet with me nor did they ask for any information.
It seemed very strange that they would want a credit check.
SOO VERY GLAD I FOUND THIS BLOG!!!

Thank you so much for having this blog out for everyone to see. I just received an identical e-mail about being an office assistant for Jose Cuervo Inc. It seemed a bit weird to me too. I found this scam on craigslist.org on July 16th. Mine came from a Johanna Elliot so be aware of this name too.
good luck everyone on your way to your real career,
Dawn
I received one (all excited thinking it was a real job at first) from “AMS Distribution Inc.) with a job for Warehouse worker.. Turns out they asked the exact same thing (almost exact wording like “zero-tolerance policy…” and the email it seems is a template and all that is changed is the job description and title. I simply replied stating that I don’t feel comfortable doing that and that if they needed to contact me they should call me. I at least wanted to get a call or meet in person. Then, I thought I should copy n paste that first line of the email and viola.. brought me here (and other Google results).. FIGURES… what a waste of my time and effort, and hopes.. It actually looked real too.. can’t believe people actually fall for the credit report thing! Always meet someone in person or at least have them call and look up their information locally. The BBB report could help, too. BTW: the closest AMS Distribution Inc to Richmond VA was in Canada! So, obviously, they were fake.. someone Googled the name and used their job description for a fake job.. a-holes..
wow, it is true. I don’t trust anything anymore. isn’t it sad? just really sad
